Title: "The ultraviolet problem for QED in d=3"

Abstract: We review some recent work on quantum electrodynamics on a three dimensional Euclidean spacetime, work which culminates in a proof of ultraviolet stability in a finite volume. The model is formulated on a fine lattice and bounds are obtained uniformly in the lattice spacing. The method is a renormalization group technique due to Balaban. Topics to be covered are (1.) Introduction, (2.) Block averaging for gauge fields, (3.) Block averaging for Fermi fields, (4.) Random walk expansions, (5.) Norms and polymer functions, (6.) Renormalization group with bounded gauge fields, (7.) Renormalization, (8.) The full expansion.

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS SEMINAR

Date: Tuesday 11 October 2022
Schedule: 16:00 - Rome Time
Where: Conference Room "R. Dal Passo"
Title: " Critical points under the energy constraint "
Speaker: Gaetano Siciliano (University of Sao Paulo, IME-USP, Brazil)

Abstract: In the talk we discuss the existence of critical points for a family of abstract and smooth functionals on Banach spaces under the energy constraint. By means of the Ljusternick-Schnirelmann theory and the fibering method of Pohozaev we show, under suitable assumptions, multiplicity results. The abstract framework is then applied to some partial differential equations depending on a parameter for which we obtain multiple solutions as well as some bifurcation results.

Algebra and Representation Theory Seminar

Date: Friday, October 14th, 2022
Schedule: 16:00 Rome Time
Where: Conference Room 1201 “Roberta Dal Passo”
Speaker: Boris KRUGLIKOV (UiT / University of Tromsø)
Title: "Symmetries of supergeometries related to nonholonomic superdistributions"

Abstract: We extend the Tanaka theory to the context of supergeometry and obtain an upper bound on the supersymmetry dimension of geometric structures related to strongly regular bracket-generating distributions on supermanifolds and their structure reductions. Several examples will be demonstrated, including distributions with at most simple Lie superalgebras as maximum symmetry. The talk is based on joint works with Andrea Santi, Dennis The and Andreu Llabres.

Algebra and Representation Theory Seminar

Date: Friday 14th October, 2022
Schedule: 14:30 Rome Time
Where: Conference Room 1201 “Roberta Dal Passo”
Speaker: Guido PEZZINI ("Sapienza" Università di Roma)
Title: " Moment polytopes of spherical varieties and applications to multiplicity-free Hamiltonian manifolds "

Abstract: Spherical varieties are a generalization of toric, symmetric and flag varieties. T hey are also relevant in symplectic geometry, in particular in relation with multiplicity-free Hamiltonian manifolds. In this talk we will describe how the combinatorial structures arising in this theory can be used to characterize those multiplicity-free manifolds that admit a Kähler structure, in terms of their moment polytopes. This is a joint work with Bart Van Steirteghem.

Schedule: 14:30 Rome Time
Where: Conference Room 1201 "Roberta Dal Passo"
Speaker: Sid Mathur (University of Paris d'Orsay)
Title: "Searching for the impossible Azumaya algebra"

Abstract: In two 1968 seminars, Grothendieck used the framework of etale cohomology to extend the definition of the Brauer group to all schemes. Over a field, the objects admit a well-known algebro-geometric description: they are represented by \mathbb{P}^n-bundles (equivalently: Azumaya Algebras). Despite the utility and success of Grothendieck's definition, an important foundational aspect remains open: is every cohomological Brauer class over a scheme represented by a \mathbb{P}^n-bundle? It is not even known if smooth proper threefolds over the complex numbers have enough Azumaya algebras! In this talk, I will outline a strategy to construct a Brauer class that cannot be represented by an Azumaya algebra. Although the candidate is algebraic, the method will leave the category of schemes and use formal-analytic line bundles to create Brauer classes. I will then explain a strange criterion for the existence of a corresponding Azumaya Algebra. At the end, I will reveal the unexpected conclusion of the experiment.
