DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS SEMINAR
Date: Tuesday, 4th July 2023
Schedule: 14:30 - Rome Time
Where: Conference Room "R. Dal Passo"
Title: " Nonlinear stability and instability in the analysis of the Einstein equations "
Speaker: Gabriele Benomio (Princeton University, U.S.A.)
Abstract: The Einstein equations are the governing equations of general relativity and admit an initial value formulation as a system of nonlinear wave equations.
The talk will present some stability and instability results for stationary (black hole) solutions to such evolution equations, enlightening interesting connections between the dynamics of solutions and the number of dimensions considered.
No prior exposure to general relativity will be assumed.
Note: This talk is part of the activity of the MIUR Department of Excellence Project MatMod@TOV (2023-2027)

Title: " A model in groupoids for the splicing operad "
Speaker: Nicolas Gues (Ecole Normale Superieure)
Abstract: The splicing operad, introduced by Budney, encodes operations on the space of self-embeddings of manifolds of the form R^j ×M, particularly on the space of 3-dimensional long knots K. Budney establishes that K forms a free algebra over the splicing operad SP3,1, with an explicit base space T H. This operad extends the little 2-discs operad, which handles connect-sum operations on knots. Remarkably, each connected component of SP3,1 and K, is an Eilenberg-Maclane space K(G,1). This motivates the search for a small groupoid model of SP3,1, meaning a simple operad in groupoids such that its classifying space is equivalent to SP3,1, as for the case of the parenthesized braids operad model for the little 2-discs operad. This thesis aims to construct a small groupoid model for the splicing operad, offering a combinatorial description of its action on the space of knots.
