Title: Grothendieck's theory of the fundamental group

Abstract: In the 1960's Grothendieck showed how to give a 'categorical' definition of the fundamental group of a space that admits a generalization to arbitrary schemes. In these lectures, we will review the basic notions and see how it unifies the theory of covering spaces and Galois theory. Towards the end, we will also summarize some recent developments.
