Irregular surfaces of general type with minimal holomorphic Euler characteristic

 We explain our recent work on the classification of surfaces of general type with p_g=q=2 or p_g=q=1. Our approach is based on cohomological rank functions, the Chen-Jiang decomposition/Fujita decomposition and Severi type inequalities.
This talk is based on a joint work with Jiabin Du and Guoyun Zhang and a joint work in progress with Hsueh-Yung Lin.
