ABSTRACT:

We revisit, in an historical perspective, the classical Fermi--Pasta--Ulam problem in one dimension. After spending some time on the physical motivations, we shortly describe some among the most relevant contribution to the subject. Special attention is payed to the possible relevance of the FPU phenomena for thermodynamics. The lecture is devoted to people who are not familiar with FPU.
