Abstract:	We survey the operator algebraic approach to conformal quantum field theory. Representation theoretic aspects in terms of tensor categories are emphasized. Various relations to quantum groups, quantum invariants in low dimensional topology, vertex operator algebras, and modular forms are also explained. No knowledge of operator algebras is assumed.
