LIGHT AND DAWNS OF NONCOMMUTATIVITY

giovedì 5 febbraio 2009 ore 14.00

Aula 'Dal Passo' Dipartimento di Matematica

Abstract: Lit by the birth of Quantum Mechanics, soon Noncommutativity spread new light on Mathematics, with the theory of Operator Algebras, which, since von Neumann works in the thirties is periodically showing new orizons. After a quick survey on some examples, we will dwell a bit more on the deeper level of Noncommutativity required by Quantum Field Theory, and on how the Noncommutativity of C* Algebras can encode an abstract picture of the dual of compact groups (the group of global gauge symmetries in Quantum Field Theory, where the need for such a new duality theory of compact groups first arose), and briefly touch on the open problems such a theory arose in more deeply non commutative domains. We will conclude with some words on the more recent dawn of Noncommutativity in the very picture of Spacetime, if explored at the extremely short (Planck) scale, and on the problem of formulating Quantum Field Theory on Quantum Spacetime.
